Introduction

The Calico Line is one of the most distinctive bloodlines in the world of Morelia viridis. Founded by Trooper Walsh and Greg Maxwell, it is characterized by its unique pixelated appearance, distinctive neck contrast, and mite-phase or speckled look. This line proved that these remarkable traits were inheritable, paving the way for decades of exciting breeding projects. Today, the Calico Line is worked by numerous breeders worldwide, including Marcial Mendez, Buddy Buscemi, David Dendinger, Mark Heger, Collette Sutherland, Christian Stewart, Luca Sepe, Pedro Caixinha, Vita Cernoch, and Eddie Appell.

History

Origins: The Computer Chondro (1993-1999)

The Calico Line story begins in January 1993, when Trooper Walsh produced a clutch of maroon and dark brown babies. One of these neonates developed into a truly unique adult, displaying a pixelated pattern never seen before. Greg Maxwell acquired this animal and named it "The Computer Chondro" — its coloration reminded him of the pixels on a computer screen.

Proving Heritability (1999-2001)

In 1999, Maxwell decided to test whether this exceptional trait was inheritable. He paired The Computer Chondro with his clutchmate sister, AquaGirl. This pairing produced another pixelated snake, definitively proving that the trait was genetically transmissible. Maxwell named this project "The Calico Project" and called the new specimen "Calico Jr." — a miniature version of his father.

Being produced from a sib-to-sib pairing, Calico Jr. is considered 100% Calico, making him the cornerstone of the line.

Expanding the Line (2001-2006)

Calico Jr. was successfully bred to two different females, producing three foundational clutches: two clutches with "LemonGirl" in 2001 and 2004, and one clutch with "Day Dream" in 2006. The offspring from these three clutches constituted the first generation of 50% Calico Morelia viridis — the ambassadors who would spread this exceptional genetics worldwide.

The Modern Legacy

Since those foundational clutches, the Calico Line has been bred and outcrossed to many other designer lines and localities. Despite the inevitable genetic dilution over generations, the Calico Line continues to produce remarkable and recognizable phenotypes. Its influence can be found today in numerous breeding projects, notably in the creation of the "Mosaicos" — a fusion with Pedro Caixinha's Mosaic Line.

Genetics

Distinctive Traits

Calico Line animals are distinguished by several visual characteristics:

  • Pixelated appearance: A unique pattern reminiscent of computer screen pixels, with color transitions occurring on individual scales rather than in diffuse zones.
  • Neck contrast: A distinctive and pronounced contrast on the neck, creating a characteristic visual demarcation.
  • Mite-phase/speckled look: A spotted or speckled appearance that adds complexity to the overall pattern.

Genetic Transmission

The 1999 pairing between The Computer Chondro and AquaGirl demonstrated that the Calico trait is heritable. Animals from sib-to-sib pairings like Calico Jr. are considered 100% Calico, while crosses with other lines produce variable percentages (50%, 25%, etc.) while often retaining the characteristic phenotypic expression.

Notable Descendants

The line includes several remarkable descendants:

  • Mr. Black
  • October
  • Mandango
  • Bruise
  • Splash
